Dessert Sauces

Zesty Orange Sauce – Orange Zest That Is

Sauces don’t always have to be savory although this has a nice citrusy taste it is definitely a sweet sauce and not savory. Now I suppose you could use it in a chicken recipe to give it a nice sweet citrus flavor and it would go well with a mild fish like cod, haddock or flounder but it really is most at home in the morning as a topping. Just because it is most at home though I am trying to show you even a so called dessert sauce has a place in other side dishes and main dish recipes if you want.

This is a really easy recipe and in fact is only a five ingredient recipe so not a lot of ingredients to have to buy and it can be put together pretty quick to. Now if you have the option for nice tree ripened oranges by all means squeeze the orange juice fresh I did it with a premium orange juice as no oranges accept those pre picked ones where I live so the premium orange juice is actually a better and fresher option for me.

Although this sauce is kind of meant to be served as a topping and from a small pitcher or similar serving dish it could be blended into a dish and used as a main sauce with the food instead of as an accompanying sauce. It could easily be made into the main focal point of the dish and I can see this being served with a dish over rice it would go very well as the sweetness of the sauce would lend well to rice or such. Although I have not tried this it might even make a nice salad dressing with a rice salad or similar dish. Continue reading

Best Ever Strawberry Sauce

This wonderful strawberry sauce is fantastic served over ice cream, or you could try it with crepes, pancakes or waffles. The recipe is really simple, and you only need strawberries, sugar and vanilla extract to make it. For the best results, use fresh strawberries, preferably organic ones for a superior flavor, granulated white sugar and pure vanilla extract. There are only 3 ingredients in the recipe so use the best ingredients you can get and you will be rewarded with an incredible flavor in the finished sauce.

Save about ¼ of the strawberries to add to the sauce near the end, then you will have some chunks in the sauce. If you prefer a smooth result though, put all the strawberries in the pan at the start of the recipe and you can even sieve and/or puree the sauce after cooking it, just to ensure it is perfectly smooth. This bright red sauce is incredible with vanilla ice cream, or you could use it in combination with hot fudge sauce and maybe add some chopped nuts to your sundae too.

If you usually grab a commercially-produced syrup to drizzle over your ice cream but you are curious how something less synthetic and chemical-filled would taste, choose this recipe and you are sure to love the result. This recipe makes about 2 cups of strawberry sauce and it keeps for 2 or 3 weeks in the refrigerator. Keep it in a squeezy bottle and you can easily drizzle it over your ice cream or pancakes, or else just use an airtight jar or bottle and spoon it over. Everyone in the family will love the taste of this, from the youngest members right up to their grandparents. Who doesn’t love a bowl of vanilla ice cream, especially when finished off with some tasty homemade strawberry sauce? Continue reading

Sweet Bourbon Dessert Sauce

This delicious sauce is quite thin, and it is best served hot over bread pudding. It is made with cream, sugar and cornstarch. Vanilla and bourbon are used for the flavor they impart, and this is an easy dessert sauce to make. Simply combine the ingredients in a pan and let the mixture thicken up a bit and get hot, then as soon as it is smooth and well-blended, it is ready to serve.

Ideal for Thanksgiving

If you are looking for a special dessert to make Thanksgiving extra good, consider making bread pudding and serving it with this fantastic sauce. Everyone will be really impressed and you will certainly be asked to make it again next year, and the one after that! It could also be good for Christmas or another special occasion. This sauce is aromatic, tasty and rich, although it is not especially thick. The reason why it is so good for bread pudding actually is it is not so thick, which means it can seep into the bread and soak them with its wonderful flavor.

There are various recipes for bourbon sauce, and some are meant to be served with salmon, steak or ham, while others are sweet and great with bread pudding, cake or even ice cream. Bourbon is a type of American whiskey. It is a barrel-aged spirit made mainly from corn, and the name comes from the French Bourbon dynasty. It has been distilled since the 1700s although it was not known as ‘bourbon’ until the 1820s. While bourbon can be made anywhere in the country it is most associated with Kentucky and the American South. If you do not drink bourbon you can buy a miniature bottle instead of a big one. If you prefer not to use alcohol in cooking, or have it at all, you can get alcohol-free whiskey flavor essences so that could be used instead, although of course the flavor will be much better if you use bourbon. Chocolate Fudge Sauce

Wonderful over ice cream, pancakes, crepes, waffles, flambéed bananas, or brownies, this chocolate fudge sauce offers an incredible flavor, and it is really easy to make as well. To make it, you will need to combine chocolate, cream, butter, sugar, vanilla, and syrup. The sauce is made in one pan, and it only takes 10 minutes to make from beginning to end.

Homemade Means the Best Flavor

Homemade fudge sauce tastes fresher and better than the kind you can get readymade, and it is so easy to make, there is no reason not to make your own. Gather together the ingredients, cook the mixture in a pan, and you will have the most wonderful sauce you can serve over fruit, crepes, or whatever dessert you are having.

Feel free to adjust the ingredients too if you wish. Some people like to use ½ cup of sugar in the recipe, which gives you a sweeter result. Others might try almond extract instead of the vanilla, for a different flavor sauce. Since you are making this, you are in charge of what goes into the mixture, so you can control what the resulting sauce is going to be like. As you would expect, this is a thick, rich sauce, and a little goes a long way. A drizzle of this over vanilla ice cream can add a lovely fudge accent to the ice cream, even if you only add a tablespoon to the dessert. Some people like to add more of course but it is quick and easy enough to rustle up another batch if need be. Continue reading

Authentic Mexican Cajeta

Whether you call it cajeta, dulce de leche or Mexican caramel sauce, there is no doubt this is one of the most amazing dessert sauces of all. Once only known south of the border but these days famed all over the globe, this sauce is thick, rich, sweet, and versatile. Use it as an ice cream topping, have it with crepes or enjoy it in another way. Cajeta keeps for up to 6 months in the refrigerator, so you can make plenty and you will find lots of different ways to serve it.

More About Cajeta

This sweetened milk sauce is usually made with goat’s milk but use cow’s milk if you prefer, or even a combination of both. The liquid is simmered until it thickens up. Remember it will get even thicker while it is cooling though, so as soon as it is thick enough to coat the back of a wooden spoon, consider it ready. Just let it cool then keep it in a jar in the refrigerator.

If you like caramel sauce you will like dulce de leche, especially the homemade kind because it is so much nicer than the kind you buy readymade. The following recipe is simple to make too, because you just need to simmer baking soda, milk, vanilla, and piloncillo in a pan until thick. If you cannot get piloncillo, which is Mexican sugar, dark brown sugar will also work here, and give the cajeta its distinctive and appealing flavor and color. Continue reading

Juicy Orange Sauce for Pancakes

Make this orange sauce for your pancakes or crepes in the morning and surprise the whole family. This sauce is sweet and delicious, and it is nice and thick too. Perhaps you usually drizzle the same kind of syrup over your pancakes in the morning or maybe pancakes are something of a rarity in your house. Either way, this recipe is always worth making. Because it is sweet, it is better for pancakes or crepes than, for example, a sauce for duck or chicken. It could also be served over vanilla ice cream or a cake-type dessert.

An Appetizing Serving Suggestion

Drizzle this over your homemade pancakes and then add some strawberries, blueberries and maybe also a sprig of fresh mint or basil to finish it off. If you have company and you serve this for breakfast prepare yourself for some very impressed breakfast guests! Pancakes (and crepes which are thinner and not so fluffy) are always good but add some homemade orange sauce and fresh berries and these touches take it to a whole new level.

You can use bottled or frozen orange juice to make it, or even freshly squeezed for the best results. Some orange zest is also nice unless you are using orange juice with pulp in it, in which case you might want to omit the zest.

White sugar counters any bitter taste in the orange juice and gives it a nice sweetness, and the cornstarch thickens up the mixture, making it thick enough to drizzle over pancakes without it soaking through. The final ingredient is the butter and this adds a luxurious mouth-feel to the sauce and makes it taste more decadent. Continue reading

Decadent Chocolate Gravy Recipe

This delicious recipe for chocolate gravy makes a thick, rich sweet gravy, which is delicious with biscuits, pancakes, ice cream, or any other dessert you like. It is best to use a hand blender or electric mixer when mixing it, so you do not get any lumps. This recipe is more like a sauce than a gravy but it is made in a similar way, in that the ingredients are heated through in a pan and it is stirred or whisked so you do not get any lumps.

This “gravy” recipe would even suit people who dislike traditional gravy and want to serve something fun after dinner! You could even make a chicken gravy recipe, beef gravy recipe or another savory gravy recipe to go with your entree and this mouthwatering chocolate gravy after it. Kids love its flavor, as well as the adults, and you can serve it with so many different desserts. It is also great with fresh fruit.

This chocolate gravy recipe is made with egg, milk, flour, sugar, cocoa powder and more, giving it a sweet and rich flavor. If you do not have a sweet tooth, you can reduce the amount of sugar you use and this is especially true if you are not using unsweetened cocoa powder to make this chocolate gravy. Continue reading
